13-year-old’s life transformed with invaluable skills developed through sailing
Meet Stanley, an inspiring 13 year old whose life has been transformed through sailing with the Andrew Simpson Foundation.
Through sailing, Stanley has developed invaluable skills that have enabled him to engage with new peers and build the confidence to help guide them. The support from our sailing community and Andrew Simpson Centres has been instrumental in building Stanley’s confidence, allowing him to make new friends and believe in his ability to achieve his goals.
Stanley’s hard work and growth were recently recognised on a larger stage at the URBOND Youth Charity Awards, held on 10th September at the Kings Theatre in Portsmouth. Surrounded by family, friends, and fellow changemakers, Stanley proudly accepted the URBOND Award for ASF Young Person of the Year. Presented by Aiming High Lead Instructor Ella Williams, the award celebrated not only Stanley’s sailing achievements but also his leadership, kindness, and growing role as a positive influence among his peers.
“Stanley began his journey with Andrew Simpson Centres Portsmouth by attending our subsidised programme, Aiming High Club. Stanley’s confidence and enthusiasm for sailing grew and he became a well-known face around the centre attending not just Aiming High Club but our mainstream Sailing club too. Stanley is now a very knowledgeable and experienced sailor. This year we have seen Stanley take on a new role as an Assistant Instructor volunteering throughout the Summer. He particularly helps the instructors at Aiming High club, helping participants feel comfortable and showing them something to aspire to. We are so pleased to have Stanley involved with our centre.”

Stanley’s story highlights the incredible impact of our Charitable Programmes, which enable young people from all walks of life to experience the joys and challenges of sailing. Without the support of the Andrew Simpson Foundation, Stanley would not have been able to pursue his passion for sailing.
