Increasing self-confidence and making new friends through sailing
When Billie is out on the water, she is equal to everyone. Sailing has dramatically increased Billie’s self-confidence and has enabled her to make new friends, giving her a direction and purpose in life.
Billie first visited the Andrew Simpson Centre when she took part in our Discover Sailing programme with her primary school. Since then, Billie has progressed through Sailing Club, into Race Club and now dreams of becoming an Olympic sailor. In the future, Billie hopes that sailing will not only help her achieve Olympic success, but also enable her to become a marine biologist. Billie has recently completed her Young Leader programme, a huge step in her watersports career pathway.
“I have made so many amazing friends through sailing. Sailing has helped my confidence to grow and I have had to learn lots of new skills. In the future I am hoping to do the Young Leader programme, so that I can then help other people to enjoy the water just like I do”.
Meet Billie, a local sailor from our Andrew Simpson Centre Portland. When Billie is out on the water, she is equal to everyone. Sailing has dramatically increased Billie’s self-confidence and has enabled her to make new friends, giving her a direction and purpose in life.
Billie first visited the Centre when she attended a Discover Sailing session. She has been a regular at the Centre ever since, participating in our weekly, subsidised Sailing Club sessions.
Billie would not have been able to pursue her passion for sailing without the support of The Andrew Simpson Foundation. The Foundation funds a variety of Charitable Programmes which enable young people, from all walks of life, to experience the joys and challenges of sailing.
