Connected Communities: Building Stronger Partnerships and Active Lives
What we’re exploring
  • Creating safe and welcoming spaces for people and families to connect
  • Strengthening partnerships between Royal Navy and civilian communities
  • Increasing access to sport, outdoor activity and wellbeing programmes

Connected Communities is a partnership project between Greenwich Hospital and the Andrew Simpson Foundation, exploring how existing facilities across the UK can be developed into vibrant sport, wellbeing and community spaces that support serving Royal Navy personnel, their families, and the wider community in which they’re based.

The project aims to enhance the role that sport, outdoor activity and shared community spaces play in supporting the wellbeing, resilience and long-term retention of Royal Navy personnel. Service families can often experience frequent relocations, separation and the challenges associated with military life. Access to welcoming, high-quality facilities and programmes can help strengthen community connections and support both physical and mental wellbeing.

Starting in Portsmouth, and soon expanding to Plymouth, Clyde and further locations around the UK, the project is exploring opportunities to strengthen existing sports and community infrastructure, including the future development of the Andrew Simpson Foundation’s Portsmouth centre and Horizons Plymouth’s new centre at Mayflower Marina.
