Sailor leads iconic all-female crew in global ocean race after funded Clipper experience
In 2015, a young sailor’s passion for the sport took a defining turn when she was selected to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity made possible with the support of the Andrew Simpson Foundation and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

Participating in the Pacific Ocean leg of the race, she discovered not only the demands of offshore sailing but also the sense of purpose and personal growth that come with overcoming challenge and fear on the open sea. The experience ignited a deeper love for ocean racing and opened the door to a future she hadn’t imagined before.

Now, nearly a decade on, she’s preparing to skipper the legendary yacht Maiden in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, a global circumnavigation rooted in the spirit of the original Whitbread Round the World Race. Her journey from ASF-funded participant to professional ocean racer is a powerful reflection of how opportunity and belief can spark lifelong transformation.

Reflecting on her time in the Clipper Race, she recalls the nerves of setting off into open water, the thrill of match racing, and the camaraderie built through shared adversity. Through high winds, big waves, and tough watches, she grew in confidence and skill – from trimming sails to helming in heavy weather. Despite emotional lows, homesickness, and the ever-present challenge of life at sea, she credits the experience with helping her grow more independent, resilient, and determined.

During her time on board, she became known for her energy and teamwork, quickly gaining the respect of her crewmates and developing a reputation for strength and leadership. That formative experience cemented her desire to pursue a career in sailing – one that has since taken her around the world.

As she prepares to lead Maiden’s all-female crew around the globe, she remains passionate about encouraging more women and girls to get involved in sailing. Maiden, through The Maiden Factor Foundation, continues to inspire and support girls’ education worldwide, and this sailor’s leadership at the helm embodies that mission.

Her story is one of talent, opportunity, and the powerful role that community support can play in changing the course of a young person’s life. The Andrew Simpson Foundation is proud to have played a part in her journey and looks forward to following her next adventure at sea.
