How our Young Leaders Programme helped turn sailor into instructor
From learning to sail at age 7 to becoming a qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor, Lewis’s journey through the Young Leaders programme shows how sailing can build confidence, skills, and a clear path into instructing and beyond.
Lewis first stepped into a dinghy at age 7. Like many young people, sailing began as a fun hobby, but it quickly grew into something much more.
At 14, Lewis joined the Andrew Simpson Foundation’s Young Leaders programme, a structured pathway that helps young adults develop confidence, communication, and leadership skills while working toward their RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification. For Lewis, the programme opened up a new way of thinking about his future.
“Being part of Young Leaders really helped me grow, not just in sailing, but in how I approach challenges and support others on the water.”
Now 18, Lewis is a qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor and continues to inspire the next generation of sailors. He’s currently progressing into foiling and is on track to complete his RYA Senior Instructor award — a milestone that reflects years of commitment, growth, and passion for the sport.
Lewis’ journey shows the power of long-term support, accessible training, and belief in what young people can achieve when given the right opportunities.
