The Portsmouth Sailing Project

School children in Portsmouth, Gosport and the surrounding area were given the opportunity to sail in 2015 thanks to the Portsmouth Sailing Project. The Foundation teamed up with the 1851 Trust  to inspire a new generation to take up sailing.

The target of the five-week summer holiday project was to provide 1,000 young children aged 9-13 years and from varying backgrounds the opportunity to sail for the first time. The aim was to break down the barriers to sailing and give youngsters the opportunity to take to the water.

Why?

It was hoped the youngsters would be inspired by their sailing experience to take up the sport and benefit from local, affordable sailing sessions to help them progress. The sailing sessions were hosted by Portsmouth Sailing Club, the Project’s temporary base at The Camber, next to the home of Land Rover BAR , the base for the British America’s Cup team, in Old Portsmouth.
